Tanzania announce squad for 2017 AFCON qualifier against Super Eagles

Tanzania has named a 20-man squad, ahead of next month’s 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Nigeria.

Coach Charles Mkwasa has picked only one foreign-based player and 19 players from their domestic league for the game.

Benno Kakolanya, Jeremiah Juma, Hassan Kabunda, Mohamed Ibrahim and Joseph Mahundi were dropped, while Shomari Kapombe, Haji Mwinyi and David Mwantika were recalled to the squad.

Injured Iheanacho to be available for Tanzania match

Manchester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho, will be available for next week’s 2017 AFCON qualifier against Tanzania, after a scan on Thursday came back with positive results.

Iheanacho was stretchered off during their UEFA Champions League play-off against Steaua Bucuresti on Wednesday night.

Olympic Swimmer Ryan Lochte charge with false crime report by Brazilian authorities


In the wake of Rio 'robbery' fiasco, Brazilian authorities have now charged 12-time Olympic medalist US swimming star Ryan Lochte, 32, with making a false statement. Police investigation revealed that Lochte and 3 other US swimmers James Feigen, Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger lied about being robbed at gunpoint when they were returning by taxi from a club in Rio.

Jose Mourinho never gave me a chance - Victor Moses

Super Eagles winger Victor Moses believes his career can go upwards now that Jose Mourinho is no longer in Chelsea and he has a new coach Antonio Conte.

Moses was signed by Roberto Di Matteo for £9m in 2009 and featured regularly under Di Mattheo and Rafa Benitez but Mourinho upon joining the club lost interest in his services and farmed him out on loan.

Nigeria's U23 Olympic team arrive back in Nigeria

Twelve players who represented Nigeria in the 2016 Rio Olympics and 7 officials who accompanied them, including coach Samson Siasia, have arrived back in Nigeria while others returned to their various bases. The Dream Team won the only medal (Bronze) for Nigeria at the Olympics following their 3-2 victory over Honduras in the third-placed match.

BREAKING: Ex-FIFA boss dies at 100

Former FIFA  President Joao Havelange has died at the age of 100, BBC Sport reports.

The Brazilian was predecessor to Sepp Blatter at world football’s governing body, serving from 1974 to 1998.

He resigned as FIFA’s honorary president in April 2013 following an investigation into bribery allegations and was admitted to hospital the following year with a lung infection.

Rio 2016: 200m Semis: Okagbare battles Schippers, Thompson


Reigning double Commonwealth Games sprint queen Blessing Okagbare faces a tough challenge and will need to run faster than her 22.23 seconds personal best to stand a chance of making the 200m final when the semi-final is run at 2am on Wednesday August 17, 2016. The seven-time Nigerian 100m queen came in first (22.71s) in her first round heat on Monday but faces another heartbreak in the semi-final after she was drawn in the same heat as reigning world champion Dafne Schippers of Holland and Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson who came second behind Schippers in Beijing at the IAAF Worlds last year and only early Sunday morning ran 10.71 seconds to win the 100m gold at the on-going Olympic in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

SPORT: Yannick Bolasie joins Everton from Crystal Palace on five-year contract

 

Everton have confirmed the signing of Yannick Bolasie from Crystal Palace on a five-year contract.

The winger has moved for an undisclosed fee, although Sky sources understand it could rise to as much as £28m.

While Everton have not announced it as a club record transfer, that total would match the amount paid to Chelsea for Romelu Lukaku in 2014 if it was paid in full.

Real Madrid beat Sevilla 3-2 in the European Supercup final in rainy Trondheim on Tuesday thanks to a brilliant individual last minute of extra-time clincher from Dani Carvajal.

Sevilla had been on the verge of victory leading 2-1 deep into added time, before Sergio Ramos equalised in the 93rd minute with the last kick of normal time, leaving the losers to taste a double dose of pain when Carvajal grabbed the late, late winner.

Marco Asensio had given Madrid the lead with a brilliant strike before Franco Vazquez equalised shortly before half-time.

Stephen Okechukwu Keshi (23 January 1962 – 8 June 2016) was a Nigerian football defender. He was also a football manager of the Nigeria national team. He was one of only two people, along with Egypt’s Mahmoud El-Gohary, to have won the Africa Cup of Nations as both a player and a coach.

Sports veterans on Sunday, continued to pour torrent of tributes on the duo of late ex-Eagles Coaches, Stephen Keshi and Shuaibu Amodu, even as they expressed mixed feelings over the call in various quarters to immortalise them.

After a torrid week in the history of Nigerian football during which two greats, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi and Shuaibu Amodu passed on, burial plans for Keshi is expected to commence this week with meetings to be held with various strata of government. Amodu was buried on Saturday according to Muslim rites. Indications have already emerged that Keshi will be buried in his ancestral home of Illah, in Delta state, with the Federal Government, Edo, Delta and Cross River state governments already indicating interest to be part of the burial ceremony. More states are expected to indicate interests. Family sources said Abuja, the Federal Capital will be the first port of call, with players of the national team expected to be led by Super Eagles Skipper John Mikel Obi to play a part in the burial ceremony. His children are also expected to start arriving from the United States later this week as arrangements peak for his burial.
