A former Lagos State commissioner of police, Alhaji Abubakar Tsav, has said that corruption will drastically reduce in the country if governors are stripped of constitutional immunity.
Tsav, in an interview with newsmen in Makurdi, said the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari was doing its best for the development of the country
.
He expressed fear that as soon as Buhari ends his tenure as president, the dreaded monster of corruption would resurface.
He said: “In the area of corruption, Buhari is doing very much. But, I think, we can only reduce corruption in this country if governors are stripped of their immunity. And if that is done, then we can fight corruption very well. As it is now, they (governors) are the people involved in corruption.
“When there is any case involving people close to them, they go and use money to bribe their way. And when they (governors) are involved in cases of corruption, you cannot investigate and take them to court because of immunity. Governors must be stripped of their immunity to stop corruption.”
Tsav said many governors have thwarted efforts to clamp down on corruption.
“When somebody is involved in a police case, the governors would call
the commissioner of police and tell him not to take action about it,
and the commissioner will comply.”
