Tears flowed freely as the funeral service for Cameroon International, Patrick Ekeng, was conducted in Yaounde, on May 14.
The funeral was attended by both retired and active Cameroon players,
who gave their support to Ekeng’s wife and family. Some of his Romania
team mates also attended.
Also present at the funeral was the country’s sports minister Bidoung Kpwatt who represented Cameroon’s president Paul Biya.
Ekeng’s brother Jacques Ekeng, paid tribute to “Patou” as he was known.
“He gave more love to his friends than to his family. That is
Patrick, he was generous,” Jacques Ekeng said. No matter the beauty,
riches and cars, you cannot be saved from death,” he told his brother’s
friends. My brother is dead with a smile, and this is what comforts me.”
Ekeng died of suspected heart failure at the age of 26 after
collapsing on the pitch during a match with his Romanian club Dinamo
Bucharest on May 6.
The 26-year-old defensive midfielder fell to the ground without any
contact with another player just seven minutes after coming on as a
substitute during the league game against Viitorul Constanta.
